"Nicely done."

date: September 7, 2003

I love the smooth framerate. The animation is adequate, though I think there were a few spots (like when an enemy gets hit) where you could have put in some more animation.

Was there sound? I didn't hear any, all the other movies I watched on NG prior to yours had sound in them, so I assuem you didn't put any in. The later reviews will prove that lack of sound, in a game especially, greatly lower the fun factor.

I guess the other thing that lowered the fun factor was that it wasn't fun. I mean, control was quite limited and ammo pickups disappeared waaay too soon if you were on the boss level and set to high quality (I've never seen a game slow down, but remain at a high framerate). Some people wish I had given them advice and not just said what was wrong. So many people seem to say "well, what was wrong with it??" even though the answer is obvious, so I'm gonna tell you, just in case you're one of those guys: You should be able to shoot and toss grenades in the air, sometimes I would jump twice in midair, touching an enemy should make you recoil or something, not just constantly lose life, sound would defiitely benefit the game, even if the files was twice as big, and most importantly, the game was monotonous. Shoot shoot left, shoot shoot right, shoot a lot at the boss, jump over him when he comes at you.

The programming was good, I'll give you that. It wasn't good enough to make this game more than a tiny bit enjoyable though. Listen up people, there's no need to make side scrollers where all you do is shot and lob grenades. It's been done before, a million times. If you're gonna make a game that is just the same game with new graphics, at least give the player a LOT of control (shooting in air, ducking, shooting upward/downward, perhaps more creative moves like kicking or dashing moves, and of course, more weapons.

OWell, people put those definitions. U can put one too...And I would like to here u rap, hehe :d

I also enjoyed the cinematics. It's cool to see them pop up and say something while you're shooting and giving the player the ETA for the copter was cool. Too bad I couldn't hear them talk or hear any explosion sounds. Come on, sound fx aren't hard.

Keep at it. You've got a lot of skill and the more you do it, the better you'll get.

Drama In Stickville 2: MT

"I don't mind sticks."

date: August 27, 2003

However, I do mind terrible terrible graphics. I think the most advanced thing you did was when the player was waking up and his eyes were blurred, but that's it. The other graphics were just bad, and not just because it wasa stick movie.

Speaking of movie, you're right; it's just an interactive movie. Actually, it's a little less than an interactive movie. It was too linear to be really interactive. It we more like having to push the play button every 3 seconds to see more. I don't want to see more of this stuff, though.

I did think the audio was well done, but that may be its only redeeming feature. The story wasn't really creative as it was a jumble of random things that almost seem coherent. I think the first Stickville game was even slightly better.

Author's Response:

Thank you for your review. Even though you think this movie has bad graphics... I think it has very good ones. For my standards. I am TERRIBLE at drawing, yet I was amazed at what I made in this game. It might just be me, but i think the story was good. It might be too "jumbled together", but in my head it was perfect. Thank you for your review. It wouldve been cool if you left some constructive criticism, but its ok. Thanks.

Not too many introductions on NG. It's good to see the animator behind the movies. Funny stuff.

Even though you said it was pointless, it really does have a point, and that is your introduction to everyone. That's enough of a point (unlike stick figures spurting blood everywhere at 4fps).

Nice sound quality too!

They say imitation is flattery... pish posh! I mean, bull crap! I thought it was kinda cool that you imitated 99K in 14K, but now you've taken the idea from Story Tag 01 and used it in this movie... Well, if you decide to imitate another one of my movies, I hope you make it a good one!

Robocop:001

"Well, you've proved it"

submission: Robocop:001
date: June 24, 2003

You've proved that most people on NG are very easily amazed by nice graphics but couldn't pick out the flaws if their life depended on it.

I give you props for the 3D rendering and models which is very nice. Cel shading, details, all there.

Since you say this movie is a test, you should be very open to suggestions on improving it, rather than just "THAT WAS THE BEST FLASH EVER!" Some of these have been mentioned before, but since I said your movie had many flaws, I better spell it out for you:

- Why did the police have such thick outlines compared to Robocop? Uniformity is key.
- What's with the nasty pixelation (very noticable in the beginning)? Try using a large image and shrinking, not the other way around.
- Your bloody was stylistic, but it didn't look it was coming from the police.
- I know he's robot, but man, Robocop sure moves slowly. I guess it's because none of the bullets even dented him, so he might as well walk over his enemies like a tank.
- This is the worst offense: The 3D models were terribly out fo sync with the background. Robocop slides all over the place when he slams that policeman into the ground, the police kneel down to the ground, the camera pans and pulls out, and the police slide around like they are kneeling on ice. You have to pay attention to that and make sure the models establish a good figure-ground relationship because it takes you right out of the movie.

I hope you take my advice seriously, if not to appease the picky NG viewers like me, but to better yourself as an animator. Sure, most of NG doesn't seem to notice or care that it's just a bunch of 3D poorly slapped onto 2d sketches, but if you take it to a non-amateur venue, you'll surely get the ass kicking your movie is asking for. I still liked the movie, I just thought you really put it together hastily.

Author's Response:

Well Since you took the time to write such an indepth review an a flash you obviously didnt like.. I'll glady explain myself here..:
1) you are right.. this was slapped together..
2)The backgrounds are from an older flash..
3)the models for the guards was a simple base model I downloaded..
4)Even the Blood was from the first Robocop I created..
As for Robocop moving slowly.. thats a first,he moves rather fast on my computer..upgrade
I originally was just going to show robocop in his various moves and positions, but later decided to give him something to shoot at, and some sort of location..
But Like I Said.. THIS IS A TEST... this is not a movie, short, or release...
And I don't mind comments and complaints.. that what the test is for.. But you obviously feel the need to present yourself as a dick ,by insulting me and insulting the viewers, to make those points.. and that part isnt nessasary..

Drawing with Jack 2

"The blind leading the blind"

date: June 16, 2003

Sorry, but people who can't draw shouldn't be teaching other people how to draw. I know you may think you're a good artist now, but after a couple years, you'll realize the mistakes you've made, correct them, and this tutorial will have been a plague on poor aspiring artists who are susceptible to any advice you give them.

You may be good compared to your peers, but even you could highly benefit from some drawing books (and NOT learing from anime).

As for the movie, it was composed pretty well. It had a decent amount of info in it. It's too bad the info is mostly wrong.

The graphics fit well with the topic, the 3d was nice, but not overdone, and the story made perfect sense and is likely to happen if aliens do visit Earth!

I thought although you kept the file size down, the super quick movements could have been toned down some. Other than that, it's satisfying. You've quickly established a universe, now you can populate it in your next movie!

So why is it that you beg and plead for folks to put sound in their movies and yet you don't put sound in yours? If you don't take your own advice, who will?

Author's Response:

Tutorials with sound are just stupid. I'm talking about ACTUAL movies.

But you gotta get better sound clips. Those are so low quality it's hard to understand anything. I realize you also compressed them in Flash, but it's the recordings that are poor. Poor Sanford.

"Well done"

submission: perish
date: May 30, 2003

If you can't understand the backwards thing, your mind is way too slow. There's nothing wrong with it. You'd probably have an aneurism with Memento then.

Great effects, good pacing. The animation was pretty good, though you could use some work on movement (not that there was much movement overall).

The song fit well.
